Brian's Winter Pages 1-52

Summary- This book is the sequal to the best-selling book Hatchet. This story is what would've happened if Brian wasn't rescued and had to survive in the winter months. Up to this point in the book Brian is surviving in the late fall in the Canadian woods. He is mostly eating rabbits and foolbirds that he hunts with his light bow and fish that he catches in the lake. In this section he also gets his first taste of venison by eating the scraps of a slaughtered doe that some wolves left behind. After tasting the meat and seeing how long it lasts he decides that he needs to make a larger, heavier bow...he just isn't sure how to make it yet.
Quote- He awakened with a bulging stomach full of grease and something close to joy in his heart. Pg 48. This shows that things are looking up for Brian and that there is hope of him survivng in these cold months ahead. This quote comes from the part of the story where Brian first has the venison. This also shows that for the first time in a long while Brian is happy and feels positive. This is also what inspires Brian to build a bigger bow...with which I'm sure he'll bag a lot of game.
Connection- This section really reminds me of the hunger games. Just the aspect of a kid living and surviving on only his knowledge of the wild and his quick wits. Also the brutality of it all reminds me of the hunger games. In this section Brian encounters many a wolf and bear kind of like the attacking-dog things in the Hunger Games. The way Brian is skilled with a bow also reminds me of Catniss from the Hunger Games. He hits small birds and rabbits with precision like Catniss hits squirrels.
